Donald Trump Spouse(s)

Mr. Trump has been married three times.

His first marriage was with former fashion model Ivana Marie Zelnickova (b. February 20, 1949). Czech-born Ivana, an alternate for Czechoslovakia’s ski team for the 1972 Munich Olympics, migrated to Canada in 1973 after divorcing her first husband, Alfred Winklmayr, an Austrian skier. Modeling assignments eventually brought her to New York, where she met and subsequently fell in love with Mr. Trump, one of New York’s most eligible bachelors at the time. The couple married in 1977 and went on to become one of New York’s most prominent “power couples”. The popular Ivana, better known as Ivana Trump, filed for divorce in 1991 after hearing rumors of Mr. Trump’s alleged relationship with actress Marla Maples.

Mr. Trump married Hollywood starlet Marla Maples (born October 27, 1963) in 1993 not long after she gave birth to daughter Tiffany Trump. The marriage was held at The Plaza, and the beautiful bride wowed the star-studded guests with a $2 million Harry Winston tiara and a Carolina Herrera dress. The marriage ended six years later in 1999 when Mr. Trump filed for divorce.

Mr. Trump wedded for the third and final time in 2005 with 5-foot-11 Slovenian model Melania Knauss (b. April 26, 1970, Melanija Knavs) after a nine-month engagement. Fluent in five languages, Melania received her big break at the age of 17 when she was spotted by fashion photographer Stane Jerko. She would go on to carve a successful modeling career which saw her featured in numerous high-profile print magazines.

On July 18, 2016, Melania was the keynote speaker on the opening day of the 2016 Republican National Convention held in Cleveland, Ohio. Her speech was initially widely praised. However, her speech soon came under scrutiny following accusations of plagiarism after three sentences detailing her life story was found to be identical to a speech delivered by Michelle Obama at the 2008 Democratic National Convention.

Sometime after July 22, 2016, Melania’s website, MelaniaTrump.com, was redirected to Mr. Trump’s campaign website, Trump.com. Critics theorized that it was caused by questions over Melania’s claim of graduating with a degree in design and architecture from a Slovenian university. This contradicted with accounts from an unauthorized biography about her which claimed that she dropped out of the university after a year.

On August 1, 2016, New York Post, a publication which had endorsed Mr. Trump a few months earlier, published a collection of nude photographs taken by professional photographer Jarl Ale de Basseville in New York in 1995. The photographs were commissioned by Max Magazine, now-defunct French men’s magazine. When asked to comment. Mr. Trump said that the photos were taken prior to their meeting, and that in “Europe, pictures like this are very fashionable and common.”

A few days later, reporters from Politico questioned Melania’s immigration status as the photographs by de Basseville was taken a year before the date she claimed to have obtained a H-1B work visa. It raises questions if Melania was working without a valid visa when the photos were taken.

In a 2004 appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show, Knauss said that Mr. Trump, her then-fiancé, is a “very private but very romantic" person.
