Donald Trump Controversies

Housing Discrimination Scandal (1973-1978)

In 1973, the Justice Department filed a lawsuit against Trump Management Corporation, charging them with discriminatory rental practices towards minorities in violation of the Fair Housing Act of 1968 for 39 properties the firm managed. The Trumps countersued the federal government with a $100 million suit two months later, arguing that the original suit was “irresponsible and baseless.” Mr. Trump claimed that the government suit was meant to indirectly pressure Trump Management Corporation to rent out homes to welfare recipients. The case was settled in 1975 when the two parties reached a settlement. A recent allegation linking Fred Trump, Mr. Trump’s father, with a Ku Klux Klan march in New York on May 30, 1927 has reignited interest in the case.

Undocumented Polish Workers at Trump Towers

In 1979, Mr. Trump hired contractors to demolish the Bonwit Teller & Co. department store to make way for the construction of Trump Tower. One of the contractors, Kaszycki & Sons Contractors, fell behind schedule, and decided to hire at least 200 undocumented Polish construction workers to help out existing union workers on the project. The Polish workers, derisively called the “Polish Brigade” by locals, were allegedly promised $4/hour wages, and worked 12-hour shifts seven days a week for well over a year to complete the project – but most were never paid for it. Many struggled to feed themselves, and ended up squatting on the site itself. Union workers, meanwhile, felt the illegal hiring of the Polish Brigade deprived them of wages and pensions, and decided to sue the Trump Organization $1 million in damages. The case was settled out-of-court in 1999 – but the Polish laborers, who had mostly returned home by then, were not part of the settlement. Mr. Trump has always denied any knowledge of the hiring of illegal Polish laborers, or their deplorable working/living conditions.

Links to Organized Crime

There have been allegations that Mr. Trump’s companies have had business relationships with several organized crimes-owned businesses in the 80s and 90s, including those of the Gambino, Scarfo and Genovese crime families. Trump Plaza was once fined at least $450,000 for unexplained complimentary gifts to Robert LiButti, a convicted felon with ties to Mafia boss John Gotti. Trump Plaza was also fined for facilitating Libutti’s alleged racist abuse of fellow gamblers at the casino. It is also reported that The Trump Organization had a close, decade-long relationship with another Mafia-linked figure turned federal mole, Felix Sater. Mr. Trump and Sater are still currently defending themselves against lawsuits brought by investors of their failed Bayrock Group development project.

Misleading Earning Figures for Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts Inc.

In 2002, the Security Exchange Commission (SEC) initiated a cease-and-desist proceeding against Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts Inc. for making inflated announcement of the company’s earnings. The SEC also found that Trump Hotels’ executives knowingly violated the commission’s antifraud provisions when releasing the company’s quarterly profits on Oct 25, 1999.

The Four Bankruptcies

Mr. Trump has never filed for bankruptcy on a personal level, but two of his companies have filed for bankruptcies four times - Trump Entertainment Resorts Inc., (formerly Trump Hotels & Casino Resorts) in 1991, 1992 and 2009, and Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City in 2004. Mr. Trump argues that he is merely using the country’s bankruptcy laws to his advantage by renegotiating debts with creditors and investors.

'Art of the Deal' Ghostwriting Scandal

Tony Schwartz, the ghostwriter of Trump’s bestselling memoir, The Art of the Deal, revealed in an interview in July 2016 that Mr. Trump made zero writing contributions to the book despite being named as a co-author. Schwartz also claimed to have created the deal maker persona that Mr. Trump subsequently latched unto and made into his own, and noted that “I created a character far more winning than Trump actually is.”
