Gary Johnson on Abortion

GARY JOHNSON: How can there be a decision more difficult than abortion, and who should be making the decision other than the woman involved? No one.

1 April, 2016: Libertarian Presidential Forum, Fox Business Network

LARRY KING: Republicans say they’re conservative, Democrats say they’re progressive. What do Libertarians say?

GARY JOHNSON: Well, they take the best of both worlds. That’s what Libertarians, that’s what I say. They take the best of both worlds. Look, we all care, we care about people. Should people be allowed to make their own choices? A woman’s right to choose, uh, it goes on and on.

18 Feb, 2016: Gary Johnson on Larry King Now

GARY JOHNSON: So, this is one of the issues where I’m hearing a question, and it’s complex. And I’m just… so, I don’t want to misspeak but this is one of those issues where I would listen to the argument on both sides. But I don’t ever see myself fundamentally altering from the fact that you as a woman need to be making choices. This is your body that this going to involve. I'm thinking, listening to you, and that you're the only one that should determine decisions revolving around that.

I will say that I did, as Governor of New Mexico, signed a bill banning late term abortion believing in the viability of the fetus at some point. But ah, that’s actually the law of the land. The law of the land in this country is that, is that a woman should have the right to choose up until viability of the fetus. And the viability of the fetus is defined as being able to sustain the fetus outside of the womb even if by artificial means. That is the current law of the land.

17 November, 2011: Gary Johnson at the University of California Town Hall Q&A

GARY JOHNSON: Well I support a woman’s right to choose up until viability of the fetus, as governor of New Mexico, I have signed a bill banning late term abortion, I’ve always favored parental notification, I’ve always favored counseling and I’ve always favored the notion that public funds should not be used for abortion. So running for Governor of New Mexico in a state that was 2:1 Democrat, I really didn’t get that vote in the primary, but I’d like to think that I got all of those votes in the general election and that’s a reality here also, for those individuals that hold that as their number one issue, I’m not going to get that vote, I would hope to get that vote if I were to move on to the general election.

5 May, 2011: Johnson speaking at the Fox News Republican Presidential Debate in Greenville, South Carolina

“Judges should be appointed who will interpret the Constitution according to its original meaning. Any court decision that does not follow this original meaning of the Constitution should be revisited. That is particularly true of decisions such as Roe vs. Wade, which have expanded the reach of the Federal government into areas of society never envisioned in the Constitution. With the overturning of Roe vs Wade, laws regarding abortion would be decided by the individual states.”

GARY JOHNSON: I signed a law in New Mexico banning late term abortions. I sign the law banning late term abortions believing there is a point of viability. And I also as governor of New Mexico supported parental notification.

25 August, 2011: Johnson speaking to CNSNews’ Editor-in-Chief Terry Jeffrey (Online With Terry Jeffrey)

“As Governor, Johnson never advocated abortion or taxpayer funding of it. However, Gov. Johnson recognizes that the right of a woman to choose is the law of the land today, and has been for several decades. That right must be respected, and ultimately he believes this is a very personal and individual decision. He feels that each woman must be allowed to make decisions about her own health and well-being.”

“Further, Gov. Johnson feels strongly that women seeking to exercise their legal right must not be subjected to persecution or denied access to health services by politicians in Washington or elsewhere who are insistent on politicizing such an intensely personal and serious issue. As Governor, Johnson did support a ban on late term abortions.”
