Stein wants to downsize military spending to put more money into the economy.
“And finally we’re calling for downsizing the military. Let’s go back to the military of just ten years ago which was half the size that it is now. We doubled that military budget to a trillion dollars a year for the bloated military industrial security complex that has not made us twice as secure. In fact it has made us less secure because it’s busy dropping bombs, expanding drone wars and killing civilians in weddings and funerals in the Middle East. This does not win the hearts and minds of the people that we’re trying to persuade that we are their friends; it’s doing exactly the opposite. So the incredible unrest that we are seeing right now with this terrible anti-Muslim movie that’s gone viral in the Middle East. We’re seeing a lot of unrest but much of that unrest was pre-meditated and planned. It wasn’t only about the movie it’s that the US is really broadly perceived as an aggressor now. We need to be seen as a champion of human rights, of economic justice, and international law and we’re not perceived that way right now because we’ve taken the side of all sorts of military and oppressive human rights violating regimes around the Middle East. So we’re calling for downsizing the military, bringing the troops home and bringing hundreds of billions of dollars back into our economy to create jobs, health care, housing, education, all the things that we need to have a secure economic future and the prosperous and sustainable communities that we deserve right here at home.”
