Hillary Clinton Controversies

Whitewater Controversy (1978-1998)

The scandal revolves around Whitewater Development Corporation, a firm which was established in the mid-70s as a real estate investment vehicle for Bill and Hillary Clinton, with partners James and Susan McDougal. The complainant argued that the Clintons leveraged their political and legal connections to facilitate loans and favors for the firm and the McDougals. The case led to fraud charges and convictions against James and Susan McDougal and former Arkansas governor, Jim Guy Tucker.

Monica Lewinsky Scandal (1995-1997)

The Lewinsky scandal led to Bill Clinton earning the distinction of being only the second ever American president in history to be impeached. The scandal revolved around nine sexual encounters between President Bill Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky inside the Oval Office.

In an appearance on NBC's The Today Show on January 27, 1998, Secretary Clinton blamed the Whitewater controversy and the Lewinsky scandal on a “vast right-wing controversy”, lending weight to claims of the Arkansas Project made by David Brock, a self-described Republican "hitman".

Pardongate (2001)

Pardongate refers to the 450 pardons granted by President Bill Clinton on the last day of his presidency on January 20, 2001. There were accusations that some of the pardons were made in return for favors or donations, and were arranged by Secretary Clinton’s brothers, Hugh and Tony Rodham.

Benghazi (2012)

On September 11, 2012, on the anniversary of 9/11, four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens, were killed during a terrorist attack on the American diplomatic compound in Benghazi, Libya. Secretary Clinton, who was serving as Secretary of State at the time, was accused of failing to provide sufficient protection to American personnel and assets abroad, and perpetrating a cover-up on the real cause of the attack. However, her original narrative was actually based on CIA talking points. The CIA (and its station chief in Libya) originally concluded that the attack was caused by an inflammatory anti-Islam video mainly because a total of 65 American embassies or consulates around the world had issued emergency messages about threats of violence in the 24-hour period leading to the attack.

Private Email Server Controversy (2015)

Secretary Clinton was accused of violating government protocols by hosting her official email on private servers in her residence in Chappaqua, New York. After the issue was made public and access to her servers were requested by State Department officials, Secretary Clinton deleted over 32,000 emails which she deemed to be too sensitive. Since then, 87 of the emails in her servers have been retroactively upgraded to either “Secret” or “Top Secret”.
