Hillary Clinton AncestryHillary Clinton is of Welsh, English, French, Scottish and Native American ancestry.
Her paternal grandfather, Hugh Rodham, hails from County Durham in northern England. Her paternal great-grandparents, John and Mary Jones, meanwhile, were born in the coal mining settlement of Ystradyfodwg (now known as Rhondda), near Merthyr Tydfil in southern Wales. Both the Rodhams and Jones were lifelong coal miners by trade. In fact, evidence unearthed by genealogy expert Megan Smolenyak suggests that the parents of John Jones - William Jones and Mary Griffiths - may have been born into servitude.
Secretary Clinton’s maternal side is dominated by French Canadians who can trace their roots back to Frenchman Antoine Martin, her great-great-great grandfather, who traveled to Quebec, Canada from Alsace, France in the first half of the 19th century.
Martin’s wife, Mary Anne Frances McDougall (baptized Marie Françoise McDougal), was the daughter of James McDougall and Catherine Godet dite Marentette. Godet’s great-great-great grandfather, Nicolas Godé, hails from the ancient province of Perch in France. Nicolas, who traveled to Canada’s Nouvelle-France territories as part of the Percheron missionary immigration of the early 17th century, was killed on October 25, 1657 in Ville-Marie, Québec during a skirmish with men from the Iroquois Native American tribe.
Secretary Clinton made a surprising revelation about her Native American and Scottish ancestry in her 2003 memoir, Living History
“I’m still amazed at how my mother emerged from her lonely early life as such an affectionate and levelheaded woman. She was born in Chicago in 1919. Her father, Edwin John Howell, Jr., was a Chicago firefighter, and his wife, Della Murray, was one of nine children from a family of French Canadian, Scottish and Native American ancestry.”
On March 1, 2010, Hillary paid tribute to her Celtic roots in an official State Department statement to the people of Wales in honor of St David's Day.
“As an American of Welsh descent, I have always had a special place in my heart for Wales – both the beauty of its land and the determination of its people. Welsh-Americans have contributed to the culture and prosperity of the United States since our earliest days. American Presidents such as Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Calvin Coolidge traced their heritage to Wales, as did icons like Frank Lloyd-Wright and Bette Davis.”
Genealogical detectives at the New England Historic Genealogical Society have also discovered that Secretary Clinton has a handful of royalties among her ancestors, including the King of the Franks, Charlemagne (747-814), William the Conqueror (1027-1087) and King Henry II (1133-1189). More contemporary relatives include Angelina Jolie (ninth cousins, twice removed), Celine Dion (11th cousins, once removed), Madonna (10th cousins, once removed) and the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla Parker-Bowles (11th cousin, twice removed).
Interestingly, Secretary Clinton and Republican front runner Mr. Donald Trump also share a common ancestor - John of Gaunt (1340-1399), the 1st Duke of Lancaster and the third son of King Edward III (1312-1377). This makes them 19th cousins!
